Learning Disabilities
If your child has a learning disability, you already know they learn differently than other students. With over 3 decades of experience working with students with learning disabilities, Mrs. Denver knows how to assess how they learn and then determine the best way to help. Not only does she teach them subject matter, she teaches them how to learn, so they’re more successful on-going.
Mrs. Denver has been trained in and uses multi-sensory instruction. Multisensory instruction involves VAKT (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Tactile) modeling to help students learn and maintain skills. Here are some of the things Compass helps students address:
Reading – letter and sound symbols recognition, phonemic awareness, reading fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling
Writing – “Written Expression” or difficulty with putting one’s thoughts into text
Math – fact recall, mathematical processes, multi-step problem solving
Processing – the ability to take in information, understand it, and put it out; information retrieval and memorization
ADD/ADHD – Attention Deficit Disorder (Hyper Activity and Inattentive)
Executive Functioning – time management skills, task initiation skills, breaking down a large task into smaller tasks, project management, homework management
Study Skills – developing a routine to get homework done correctly and on time, grade monitoring
Self-advocacy skills - knowing when and how to email teachers and counselors and becoming an independent learner
